In 1667 according to the wishes of Louis XIV, the Royal Academy organized an exhibition of its members at the Louvre. The Société des Artistes Français, direct heir to this salon created by Colbert for the King, has gone through all eras: royalty, empires, revolutions, wars, bringing in its wake the greatest names of artists who have marked these last centuries: Delacroix, Ingres, Manet, Rodin, Claudel, Bartholdi, Dufy, Picabia… In 1881, it took its current name of Société des Artistes Français. Since 1901, every year, with the exception of a few interruptions due to wars or construction, the show has taken place in Paris at the Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées. Today, the Société des Artistes Français has several hundred members, to which several hundred exhibitors are added every year at the time of the show.

Traditionally, artists are divided into five sections, painting, sculpture, printmaking, architecture, photography. They represent the different expressions of current art being created. The artists are selected by a Jury elected by the members from among the gold medalist artists. In each section, the jury is regularly renewed every three years. This jury awards bronze, silver and gold medals, in accordance with the statutes, on the quality of the works presented during the fair. A medal of honor rewards the overall work of an artist recognized by his peers. Private prizes are also distributed. They are provided by donations and bequests made to the Society of French Artists.

All of the artists who are members of the Society who organize this annual exhibition are volunteers. The hanging managed by an exhibition curator, also elected, is carried out by teams of exhibitors. Each year, the Société des Artistes Français offers special events related to the great moments in its history or artistic news. For this edition, a tribute is paid to the many artists who participated in the war of 14-18. The Higher Institute of Applied Arts (LISAA) is finally invited to exhibit some of its best students. “Since 2006, the Salon des Artistes Français has returned to the Grand Palais after renovations, as part of Art en Capital. This artistic event brings together “historic salons” which have crossed history beyond fashions and in which contemporary creation is expressed today. Every year 2500 artists exhibit their works and the various trends in current art in front of 30 to 40 visitors, directly, outside the commercial circuits ” emphasizes Martine Delaleuf, president of the Society of French Artists.
