The Solheim Cup, a competition created in 1990 by Karsten and Louise Solheim, also founder of the PING brand, opposes the American and European women's teams. The competition is played every two years alternately with the Ryder Cup: it was played in even years until 2000 and is now played in odd years since the events of September 11, 2001 (the 2001 Ryder Cup having been postponed to 2002) .

The tournament takes place following the Ryder Cup model from Friday to Sunday:

  • Friday: 4 foursomes in the morning, 4 fourballs in the afternoon

  • Saturday: 4 foursomes in the morning, 4 fourballs in the afternoon

  • Sunday: 12 singles

The first team to arrive at 14,5 points wins.

The selection on the European side is determined by 3 factors

  • 2 players according to the Solheim Cup ranking of the LET (Ladies European Tour)

  • 4 players according to the Rolex Ranking (world ranking)

  • 6 captain's choice

On the European side, the Solheim Cup ranking is calculated with all the points won between two editions of the Solheim Cup. For this 2021 edition, the points are taken into account since the 2019 edition of Gleneagles.

The 2021 edition will be played in the United States on the Toledo course in Ohio and a Frenchwoman will defend the colors of Europe: Céline Boutier.

Today 66th in the world, the Frenchwoman will take part in this competition for the second time. His first participation had been crowned with success. Europe was first imposed on the course of Gleneagles in Scotland 14,5 points to 13,5, but also a brilliant ratio of 4 wins in as many games played.

With only 8 tournaments counting for the LET circuit, Céline Boutier has managed to climb to 9th position in the points classification for the selection, the Scottish captain Catriona Matthew gives her again her confidence by selecting her for this 2021 edition. therefore present from September 4 to 6 to defend the title acquired in 2019 by the European team.

She will be alongside the German Sophia Popov and the Swedish Anna Nordqvist, 2020 and 2021 winners respectively of the AIG Women's Open, the second Swedish team Madelene Sagstrom, the three Britons Charley Hull, Mel Reid and Georgia Hall, the Danish Emily Pedersen, and the Spanish Carlota Ciganda. Three rookies join the team in Toledo: the Danish Nanna Koerstz Madsen, the Irish Leona Maguire and the Finnish Matilda Castren.
