Remain attentive to the challenges of contemporary creation; wonder about the transformations of the gallery owner's profession; anticipate changes in the world of creation as well as that of the exhibition; cultivate a waking state in front of the moving landscape of related artistic events; carry out forward-looking actions; be creative and innovative while ensuring a spirit of continuity in the design of the event; work to consolidate its foundations and pursue its development; these are the guidelines that guided the development of this 42nd edition of FIAC.

The unprecedented deployment of the Hors les Murs route, a constitutive element of the identity of FIAC, confirms the axis of historic sites in the heart of Paris along the Seine: the Grand Palais and the Jardin des Tuileries in 2006, the Museum National d'Histoire naturelle and the Jardin des Plantes in 2011, the Banks of the Seine in 2013 and the National School of Fine Arts in 2014.

One observation is in order: the vast majority of the great Parisian cultural institutions are also located near the Seine, a structuring element of the city of Paris with strong symbolic value. Among them, Maison de la Radio, Musée de l'Homme, City of Architecture and Heritage, Mona Bismarck American Center, Palais de Tokyo, Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, Musée du quai Branly, National Galleries of the Grand Palais, Petit Palais, Musée de l'Orangerie, Musée d'Orsay, ENSBA - Palais des Beaux-Arts, the Monnaie de Paris, Institut du Monde Arabe, National Museum of Natural History, La Maison Rouge - Fondation Antoine de Galbert, La Cinémathèque Française, Bétonsalon - Center for Art and Research, National Library of France - François Mitterrand site, Louvre Museum, Decorative Arts Museum, Collège des Bernardins.

Based on this observation and inspired by the model of the famous Museum Island in Berlin and the emblematic Museum Mile in New York, FIAC & OFFICIELLE are offering, with Museums en Seine, a new experience of cultural Paris; a river of museums, a museum waterway for the delight of its visitors.

Museums in Seine spreads out from the west of Paris with the Maison de la Radio, a new partner location of FIAC and OFFICIELLE to the east with the National Library of France, whose pier will be open for this occasion. Museums in the Seine connects the prestigious cultural venues located along the Seine, the Grand Palais and the Cité de la Mode et du Design and the Hors les Murs sites of the FIAC & OFFICIELLE.

Last year during the inauguration of OFFICIELLE, the route which appeared to be the most natural between the Grand Palais and the Cité de la Mode et du Design - the waterway - is at the origin of what s imposes today like a new cartography for Paris, Museums in Seine.

During the third week of October, the FIAC & OFFICIELLE will be the anchor points. FIAC 2015 reaffirms the strengths of its identity:

  • the demand for exemplary quality and the rigorous choices that guarantee it,
  • a generalist vocation which makes it possible to offer a balanced panorama of modern art and contemporary art,
  • its openness to different forms of creation,
  • its roots in the heart of Paris, in symbiosis with public and private actors in the world of art and culture

FIAC 2015 will bring together 173 galleries from 23 countries at the Grand Palais. France is represented by 42 galleries (25%), then comes the United States with 35 galleries, Germany with 26 galleries, the United Kingdom with 14 galleries, Italy with 10 galleries, Belgium with 9 galleries, Switzerland with 6 galleries, Brazil with 5 galleries and Mexico with 4 galleries. 68% of the galleries are European against 65% in 2014. The countries newly represented this year are Colombia and Canada. 20 galleries are participating for the first time or returning to FIAC.

FIAC is pleased to announce the 2nd edition of its new OFFICIAL event

OFFICIAL will be held in Paris from Wednesday October 21 to Sunday October 25 at the Docks - Cité de la Mode et du Design. The preview will take place on Tuesday October 20. OFFICIAL will welcome around sixty galleries from 13 countries working in the field of contemporary art and emerging creation.

OFFICIAL highlights galleries whose programming demonstrates a particular ability to decipher contemporary creation in its most recent expressions. It emphasizes the discovery of galleries and artists, but also the rediscovery of artists who appear to be pioneers or visionaries.

The selection committee is made up of the exhibition curators, Hou Hanru (Exhibition curator / Artistic Director of MAXXI - Rome), Anne Dressen (Exhibition curator ARC / Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris) , Florence Ostende (Exhibition curator and art historian - Paris), as well as Olivier Antoine (Founder / Director of the Art: Concept gallery - Paris) and Josée Gensollen, (collector and patron, Marseille).

Organized jointly with FIAC and OFFICIELLE, the 2015 edition of the Hors les Murs course reflects an enhanced and enriched artistic program. Radiating from their historic heart, the Tuileries Garden, National Domain of the Louvre which this year presents its tenth edition, the works of art extend to the Jardin des Plantes and to the various spaces of the National Museum of Natural History, at the Place Vendôme and on the banks of the Seine.

The Hors les Murs route offers a new stage in its 2015 edition to discover a mythical building of Parisian heritage: the Maison de la Radio which will present a program of sound works, creations and radio archives imagined by the commissioner Anne- Laure Chamboissier.

A program including films, performances and concerts will also be presented at the Cité de la Mode et du Design. Cartes Blanches evenings dedicated to artists will be presented at Silencio.

With OFFICIELLE, FIAC is continuing its various performance programs. Ouvertures / Openings, designed and produced in collaboration with the Louvre Museum, and accompanied by the In Process performance cycle dedicated to young creations designed in collaboration with the exhibition curator Mehdi Brit and En Scène, a performance program developed in collaboration with the young artists of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts which will present its inaugural edition on the Seine floor at the Cité de la Mode et du Design during OFFICIAL.

The artists' film programs at the Cinéphémère (presented in collaboration with the Fondation d'entreprise Ricard and in association with curator Daniel Kurjakovic and at the Auditorium of the Grand Palais continue. Thus the FIAC & OFFICIELLE renew their support for the forms of expression on the margins of the market but at the heart of creation. The concerns of contemporary society, the ideas that spring up and the questions that result from them are addressed in two programs of conferences and conversations, one at the National History Museum natural study on the relations between art and science organized in collaboration with COAL (Coalition for Art and Sustainable Development); the other at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris on contemporary poetry and social sciences, designed by Alex Cecchetti.

The Parisian art scene is enriched with new places of art and beautiful cultural initiatives. The Galeries Lafayette Foundation sees the radically innovative architecture proposed by Rem Koolhas for its future building take shape for the opening planned for 2017 and invites the public to support it with the Lafayette Anticipation foreshadowing program. After a long renovation, the Musée de l'Homme re-opens its doors and presents a tour of works by Pascale Marthine Tayou. Inaugurated at the end of 2014 after a rehabilitation signed by Xavier Veilhan, the Château de Rentilly, second site of the FRAC Ile-de-France, presents works from the collection of the National Center for the Plastic Arts.

The 42nd edition of FIAC will also be an opportunity to discover an exceptional artistic program in Paris and in the region. The synergies that the FIAC is developing with those involved in cultural life through initiatives such as the Private Tour, the Nocturne of the Parisian galleries, Thursday October 22 and Museums in the Seine, contribute to the international development of the French artistic scene.

Outside France but close to us, the closing evening of FIAC 2015 will be marked by the inauguration of the first permanent building of the Aïshti Foundation in Beirut, Lebanon, designed by architect David Adjaye and dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions and works from the private collection of Tony Salamé. Developed over the past decade, it contains more than 2000 pieces. The inaugural exhibition, curated by Massimiliano Gioni and entitled New Skin, presents a thematic selection of more than 100 works by international contemporary artists, among which: Etel Adnan, Ziad Antar, Tauba Auerbach, Agostino Bonalumi, Carol Bove, Kerstin Brätsch, Daniel Buren, Enrico Castellani, Urs Fischer, Wade Guyton, Camille Henrot, Glenn Ligon, Lucy McKenzie, Giuseppe Penone, Gianni Piacentino, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Seth Price, RH Quaytman, Gerhard Richter, Pamela Rosenkraz, Rayanne Tabet, Wolfgang Tillmans, Kari Upson , Andra Ursuta, Christopher Wool, Danh Vo, Charline Von Heyl, Michael Williams and Akram Zaatari.

Special Projects

Swarovski Series presents a work produced by artist Wu Tsang in collaboration with the Austrian house Faithful to its convictions and its commitment to contemporary creation which have led it to develop operations of support and partnership with important institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Whitechapel Gallery in London or the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Swarovski house has joined forces for the second consecutive year with FIAC. This year, Swarovski in collaboration with FIAC presents for the first time a work on the Balcony of Honor of the Grand Palais. This initiative marks the first edition of a program which aims to produce a new piece each year in collaboration with an artist who wishes to explore and invest the crystal as a medium. For the 2015 edition of FIAC, Nadja Swarovski and Jennifer Flay selected the project of the American artist Wu Tsang.

Introduced to Swarovski stones, integrating them into his work for several years, the Wu Tsang project brings together two fundamental pillars of the Austrian brand: creativity and innovation.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain: this is the title of the sculptural and luminous installation produced by visual artist and director Wu Tsang in collaboration with Swarovski.

It is part of a series of works in progress in which the artist explores the acoustic properties of crystal as a medium. Considering in particular voice and language, Wu Tsang draws a parallel with the interaction of crystal and light, a metaphor for the medium and its message. Like the crystal that refracts light, the medium represented by the voice has a whole range of characteristics (color, texture, transparency) and returns language, like light, in an infinite spectrum of meaning.

On the occasion of the FIAC, Wu Tsang reserves for the Balcony of Honor of the Grand Palais his most monumental installation ever created to date. Inspired by the iconic parable of the Wizard of Oz in the cult eponymous film of 1939, this work is a poetic interpretation of the relationship between the disembodied authoritarian voice and the illusion of power.
