After the success of the two previous editions in 2017 and 2018, here is the third and last part of the exhibition "Vis-à-vis, Fernand Léger et ses ami.es". Placed under the sign of creative friendship and collaborative spirit, this cycle of exhibitions consists in comparing a work from the museum's collection with that of another artist, painter or sculptor, with whom Fernand Léger ( 1881-1955) was able, during his career, to establish a friendly relationship or develop an artistic collaboration.

With a naturally generous, curious temperament and open to the technical and artistic innovations of his century, Fernand Léger has always surrounded himself with artists who were able to influence his approach as a painter. At the crossroads of the main movements of the European avant-garde, her work, oscillating between abstraction and figuration, accompanied the great aesthetic upheavals of the first half of the XNUMXth century: she made an original contribution to modernity while asserting freedom and the independence of spirit and creation of the painter.

Beyond a rereading of the collections, the Fernand Léger National Museum highlights, thanks to this program of exhibitions, the thematic and stylistic proximity between the works but also the reciprocal, fruitful influences that have marked and nourished the artists of this period.

During the two previous editions, the exhibition tackled different themes such as the representation of movement or the fascination of artists for the mechanical world. Different artistic movements of this period have been mentioned such as Purism, Futurism or Surrealism. The term friend, widening to the concept of artistic heritage, also posed the question of the posterity of Fernand Léger, through the presentation of artists from the second half of the 1909th century, who were inspired by his work such as Francis Bacon (1992-1923) or the American artist, founder of Pop Art, Roy Lichtenstein (1997-1932), Erró (born in 1937) and Eduardo Arroyo (2018-XNUMX), two major representatives of narrative figuration.

In 2019, the third part "Vis-à-vis, Fernand Léger et ses ami.es" explores eminently classic subjects of painting, such as the representation of the human figure, or that of the landscape, to reveal how modern artists seized them to revolutionize them better. At the crossroads of all the great artistic revolutions, the work of Fernand Léger brings together and crosses all the currents of painting, marking with his visionary imprint the creation of today.
