Maurice Renoma, the character

Through a selection of photos retracing his photographic path, Maurice Renoma welcomes us into his spooky universe without any taboos. It is true, Maurice Renoma wants to be on the fringes of society, he likes to imagine his own path; however dissonant it may be, he has given himself complete freedom to draw it. Wanting to be a renegade himself, he draws his inspiration from counter cultures and free and indecent encounters.

Although the artist's journey cannot be defined as something linear, a frame of thought still links each of his adventures: an I-don't give a damn entirely assumed mixed with a desire to live and discover.

The photos, the feeling

Even if they do not belong to the same phases and eras of Maurice Renoma's life, the subjects of his photos express something discordant, ambiguous, deconstructed, sometimes even going to the absurd. Maurice Renoma has fun manipulating, playing with his photos as if to rediscover them, redefine them, give them new life. His series on the Chelsea Hotel will be diverted, swirled, blurred. All this with the aim of bringing to the surface the disparity and the psychedelic dimension of his feelings towards the world of Chelsea. His discordant framing seems to focus on an innocuous detail, it imposes on the observer an unusual perspective: the same reality, a completely different vision. Morals about society and about man infiltrate his photos under the mask of entertainment.
His photos, taken from the series "Le Trou", are a source of anxiety and introspective research. What is this abyss from which we ardently want to escape, what is this light towards which we all stretch our arms?

Even if he were free spirit, something nevertheless heavy and serious sneaks into some of his images and it results in a disturbance and intrigue. The observer can then become aware of the danger and the obscurity which, always, will pursue the free spirit.
