The Open was scheduled to take place in Kent from July 12-19, but the championship had to be canceled based on recommendations from the UK government, health authorities, public services and The R&A advisers. This is the first time since World War II that the original golf championship, first played in 1860, has been canceled.

The 149th Open will be played at the Royal St George's from July 11-18, 2021.

The 150th Open will be played in St Andrews from July 10 to 17, 2022.

The R&A will transfer tickets and hospitality packages purchased for the Championship in 2020 to the Open in 2021. Buyers who no longer wish (or can no longer) attend the Open in 2021 will receive a full refund. Further information on this process will be sent directly to purchasers of tickets and hospitality packages in due course.

Martin Slumbers, Managing Director of The R&A, said: “Our top priority is to protect the health and safety of the supporters, players, officials, volunteers and staff participating in The Open. We are deeply attached to this historic championship and we made this decision with a heavy heart. We know it will be disappointing for a lot of people around the world, but this pandemic is seriously affecting the UK and we need to act responsibly. It's the right thing to do. "

"I can assure everyone that we have explored all of the options for playing The Open this year, but that is not going to be possible. "

“Organizing a sporting event of this magnitude involves many different considerations. We are counting on the support of emergency services, local authorities and a whole host of other organizations to organize the championship and it would be unreasonable to place additional demands on them when they have far more urgent priorities to deal with. In recent weeks we have been working closely with these organizations as well as the Royal St George's, St Andrews Links Trust and other golf organizations to resolve the remaining external factors and we have done so as soon as possible. We thank them all for their help and cooperation throughout this process. "

“I especially want to thank our fans around the world and all our partners for their support and understanding. In a difficult time like this, we need to recognize that sport needs to be kept apart to allow people to focus on their health and safety and that of their families. We are committed to supporting our community at large in the weeks and months to come and we will do everything in our power to help golf get through this crisis ”.

The other Professional and Amateur R&A Championships scheduled for this year are under review and news will be given on any further changes.
