The Presidents' Hotel

Inspired by Italo-Andalusia, the Biltmore Hotel, located in the Coral Gables district, is a true myth in Miami. At the end of the 20s, Johnny Weissmuller was a lifeguard there before putting on Tarzan's loincloth for Hollywood. Later, the heads of state and presidents of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Georges Bush and more recently Barack Obama, got into the habit of lounging there and enjoying the largest hotel pool incognito from the eastern United States. “The Biltmore is known to be the Presidents' Hotel. In 1994, Bill Clinton hosted 34 heads of state at the Summit of the Americas which was held in our conference center. It's a little bit the hotel where the grown-ups like to meet up when they come to Miami, because it's not in Miami Beach and it's quieter, especially in terms of security ” explains Philipe Parodi, the establishment's French marketing director.

Monument

In the middle of the Roaring Twenties, the town planner and promoter George Merrick created from scratch the Coral Gables district, a garden city with Venetian, Moorish, Spanish, Gothic and colonial influences. In the process, in 1926 he undertook the construction of the Biltmore Hotel in collaboration with the architectural firm Schultze and Weaver. A pharaonic project whose campanile tower 100 meters high, freely inspired by the Giralda in Seville exceeded at the time that of freedom in the center of Miami. During Prohibition, it was not uncommon to meet Al Capone in the corridors of the hotel which had its headquarters. Legend has it that there are still traces of gun bullets in his suite. During the Second World War, the establishment became a military hospital, then served as a campus for the medical school, dragging in its wake a reputation as a haunted castle ... In 1987, after a facelift of nearly 50 million dollars, it becomes a hotel managed by the Seaway Hotels Corporation again. Listed as a historical monument since 1972, the hotel now has 273 large rooms and suites, four restaurants and two bars, a spa and a fitness center, a modular conference center equipped with the latest technology, as well as a culinary academy ...

A swimming pool that takes your breath away!

With its 2000 square meters, the Biltmore swimming pool has something to give into the intoxication of long lengths. When the hotel opened, the pool was the scene of major water parties and shows, diving demonstrations, fashion shows and celebrity parties. “The swimming pool was for a long time the largest in the United States, making 2,5 million liters of water for 100 meters long and 50 meters wide. This is where Johnny Weissmuller trained to break the Olympic swimming record. Every Sunday, the swimming pool became a place of spectacle. Tribunes for 3000 people were installed around the basin. The entire Miami Jet Set met there on weekends to have brunch in the morning and watch the shows in the pool in the afternoon. The current waterfalls were at the time diving platforms for competitions. There was synchronized swimming with swimmer and actress Ester Williams, fashion shows on a large stage in the middle of the pool where singers performed ” recalls Philippe Parodi. Today, nine private cabins surrounded by palm trees, hibiscus and bougainvillea still emphasize the serenity of the place.

Olympian calm

“We are working with tour operators to make the hotel known internationally because it remains for foreigners and especially the French the greatest secret of Miami. For five or six years the cultural offer has exploded. Each district develops its own specificity and atmosphere. The beach is perhaps today the least interesting thing to discover in the city ” explains Philippe Parodi, Biltmore's marketing director. With its ten tennis courts, its Merrick suite at 15e upstairs, its five-star restaurant and above all its Olympian calm a few kilometers from the international airport, The Biltmore has indeed once again become "The place to Be" in Miami.
