There are events that make history, dates that are marked with a white cross and places that testify for posterity. This is the case with the Royal Country Club of Tangier, founded in 1914 and which today is there to remind you that Morocco has a centuries-old tradition in terms of good manners. To celebrate this, the Royal Country Club of Tangier is organizing, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, its Centennial Trophy from April 9 to 11.

Royal Country Club of TangierFounded by Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz at the request of the diplomatic staff of Tangier, at that time, city with international status, the Royal Country Club of Tangier which bore the name of Diplomatic Country Club, enjoyed a great reputation as it constituted the the very first Golf in the Mediterranean basin and one of the oldest in Africa. Built according to the rules of this art with British origins on a 9-hole course by English architects, Cotton and Pennink, the Golf will quickly expand to reach the 18 holes. Ideally located 3 km from the city center, in the middle of a luxuriant nature made up of pines, firs, eucalyptus and cypresses, the Golf offered a panoramic view of the Mediterranean. And it is no coincidence that the place will constitute during all the first half of the last century and until the 1980s, a must for international celebrities who went on vacation in the city of the strait. This, like the figurehead of the American Jet Set, Barbara Hutton, heiress of the chain of stores Woolworth. It is also within the Clubhouse of the Royal Country Club of Tangier that the late King Hassan II organized in 1987, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the last great press magnate, Malcom Forbes, a lunch in his honor and in that of its 700 guests. Prominent figures such as politicians, businessmen and celebrities such as Henry Kissinger, Jimmy Carter, Rupert Murdoch, Elisabeth Taylor, Calvin Klein and Donald Trump. This means that the Royal Country Club is one of the high places that have made the history of Tangier.

A reinvented journey

Centenary, the Country Club of Tangier was therefore the starting point for Moroccan golf which, under the enlightened impulse of Hassan II took a real boom to become the spearhead of a golf tourism policy on the scale of country. In 2001, the area of approximately 65 hectares was given a facelift to keep pace with the new directives of the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation under the aegis of its Honorary Vice-President, HRH Prince Moulay Rachid. And it is the famous English architect Peter Harradine who will be in charge of carrying out the deep renovations necessary to make the Royal Country Club, a course meeting the most advanced standards in the matter. Offering a course of excellent quality while respecting its natural and authentic setting, the game takes place on a hilly terrain covered with forests with its 18 holes which undulate among cypresses, pines and eucalyptus. Technical, the course offers an uneven part and a flat part for a game, sometimes difficult, sometimes simple, thus sparing some surprises which oblige the players to surpass themselves. But if Golf is a sporting activity, it also represents a moment of leisure and "quality time" as the guests can benefit from an ideal setting within its Club house for lunch or dinner facing the breathtaking view of a large garden dominated by a fountain, all overlooking the putting green and the driving range. A Club house which will also have benefited from Harradine renovation work since the latter has undertaken to enlarge it by adding a new restaurant room opening onto hole 18. In 2014, the Royal Country Club was chosen to host the final phase of the Throne Cup.

On the occasion of the festivities that will mark the centenary of this legendary place that is the Royal Country Club of Tangier, the organizers had the good idea to organize, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, a trophy of the centenary to be held from April 9 to 11. On this occasion, the official inauguration of the centenary museum will take place as well as a presentation and dedication ceremony of the commemorative work produced especially for the event. With the participation of 88 players forming 44 teams of 2 players, the tournament has no handicap limit. Three net prices and one gross price are provided for as endowments.
