As so often at a US Open, the world's best players faced a tough course, testing and challenging every area of the game of golf. The favorites were however quickly placed at the forefront during the first laps with the presence of Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm or even Rory McIlroy, at the top of the leaderboard.

It was finally Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris who took the lead in the tournament on Sunday. A three-way confrontation then began between these two players and world number 1 Scottie Scheffler. After a thunderous start to the game from the Masters winner with four birdies on his first nine holes, these three players stood in a pocket handkerchief.

One of the turning points of the tournament was a 16-meter putt on the 13th hole by the Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick to return to co-leader, when he had started his comeback with a bogey on the 10th then the 11th. He signed a new birdie on hole 15.

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler missed opportunities to pick up the score and signed a -5 total at the clubhouse. The last game came on tee 18 with the following scores: Fitzpatrick -6, Zalatoris -5.

The Englishman misplaces his faceoff in the bunker while his American friend finds the fairway. Matt Fitzpatrick then hits at this point in the tournament, which is surely close to the winning shot, a fairway bunker out dropped less than 5m from the flag leaving him with a putt for the win.

Zalatoris also finds the green slightly closer than the Englishman. The two men both signed a 2 putt, Will Zalatoris missing the opportunity to snatch a play-off and leaving the victory to the Briton.

At 27, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ryder Cup player and multiple winner on the DP World Tour, writes the most beautiful line of his record, he is winner of the US Open. At the same time, he joined the world top 10, 10th, his best career ranking.

Will Zalatoris must be content with a new second place, after that of the PGA Championship a few weeks ago.

Rory McIlroy finished 5th in the event and took second place in the world rankings from Jon Rahm. The Spaniard will not have played the last lap he hoped for. Starting 3rd at -3, he returned a card of 74 (+4) for a final 12th place.
