The US Women's Open, the last Major of the season, postponed to next December will take place in Houston without spectators, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the American Golf Federation announced on Wednesday. The US Women's Open initially scheduled for June 4-7, shifted to December 10-13, at the Champions Golf Club

The "safety of everyone involved," especially the players, prompted the US Golf Association to make "the right decision," said John Bodenhamer, director of competitions at the USGA.

The defending champion is South Korean Lee Jeong-eun, who won last year in Charleston, South Carolina. She only played two tournaments this year on the international circuit (LPGA), in February in Australia, before the start of the pandemic.

The days being shorter in December, two courses will be used, therefore behind closed doors, to compete in the four rounds of this Major, and there will be no qualifying.

The Houston Open, counting for the men's circuit, will be held next month, with a limited number of spectators.
