Van Dam said that after scoring 8 under the par in the second round, to have a shot at taking this tournament, she knew she had to step up a gear.

“It gave me so much confidence that I knew I could birdie every hole. I had to be patient, trust my long game and I was really happy with my putting. "

The day started with a group of five players separated by just two shots from the top of the table, while Van Dam led in one stroke at the halfway point, Jiyai Shin (South Korea), Carly Booth (Scotland) and Madelene Sagstrom (Sweden) were all within immediate reach.

Shin looked to be the most threatening after going up to 12 under on par, she then joined Van Dam on 12, before losing her lead on the next hole.

But the defending champion decided to make a double, again found herself square with a birdie on the 15.

Just as the plays were made, Van Dam hit 15 in half and putted an eagle and went 15 under par.

Shin continued to claim the title when she putted for a birdie on the 16 from Van Dam.

The Korean then conceded a bogey on the 17th and Van Dam took the advantage with a birdie on the 16th and then sealed her victory with another birdie on the 18 (-17) 196 final.

The ActewAGL Canberra Classic is Van Dam's fourth title on the European Tour.

“I've been hitting a lot of balls over the last couple of months and with my trainer Dave we've been working on my swing so I'm really happy right now. "

Katja Pogacar came home with a final lap card of 68 to take second place, her best result on the Ladies European Tour.

“It was my first time playing in the last group in front of a crowd, which was different and a great experience… and I loved it. "

“I'm so happy to have played under the pressure. I was a little shaky at the start, but I finished strong… which will give me a lot of confidence for the whole season. "
