For several weeks, a sword of Damocles has been hanging over the heads of players who have decided to play tournaments sanctioned by the Saudi Golf League. The decision of Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour has finally fallen: dissident players are excluded from the PGA Tour.

Rumors have been swirling for the past few weeks, with the first Liv Series tournament getting closer and closer. Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour have finally decided: "in accordance with the rules of the PGA Tour tournaments, players participating this week without the agreement (of the PGA Tour) are suspended and no longer eligible to participate in a PGA Tour tournament, including the Presidents Cup. This also includes all tours sanctioned by the PGA Tour: the Korn Ferry Tour, the PGA Champions Tour, PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamérica. »

Even if this sanction remained predictable, it is nonetheless strong. The DP World Tour has not yet communicated on its position, but its decision should not be long in coming. Even if the PGA Tour has made its decision for tournaments sanctioned by its circuit, the question still arises for major tournaments, some of which are managed by different authorities than those of the circuits. This question is surely one of the biggest questions from players such as Dustin Johnson or Phil Mickelson who won major titles in 2020 and 2021.

Jay Monahan: “Their participation in a Saudi Golf League / LIV Golf tournament is a violation of our tournament rules. The same sanction will be applied to any player who participates in a future Saudi Golf League event.”
