Although few people in the golf world have had anything to say about the murder of George Floyd by Derek Chavin, Tiger Woods broke the silence via Twitter Monday evening strongly condemning the tragedy and the violence that followed.

"My thoughts are with George Floyd, his loved ones and all of us who are injured at the moment"said Tiger Woods. “I have always had the greatest respect for our law enforcement agencies. They train so diligently to understand how, when and where to use force. This shocking tragedy clearly crossed that line ”.

Floyd's death, ruled as a homicide Monday by a county medical examiner and an independent autopsy ordered by Floyd's family, has sparked outrage across America. Video of a bystander showing Derek Chavin, a now laid-off Minneapolis police officer, holding his knee to Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes, has circulated widely since Floyd's death on Memorial Day.

Derek Chavin has since been arrested and charged with third degree murder and manslaughter, although Floyd's family want the former officer to be charged with first degree murder. On Monday, Ben Crump, the family's lawyer, again called for peace.

Woods' niece, Cheyenne Woods, spoke to Beth Ann Nichols of Golfweek about the incident in a post on Sunday.

“Just thinking about it (George Floyd) still gives me goosebumps and chills. It is a harsh reality of what is happening in our country ”, said Cheyenne Woods. "It's a story and a tragedy that's happened far too many times throughout the history of the company, but now it's being filmed again and broadcast on social media, so it's spreading.".
