Leader at the start of the 18th, playing -4 on seventeen holes, Rory McIlroy resisted the onslaught of his pursuers after posting a 65 (-7) on the first day of the DP World Tour Championship. An ugly double bogey on par 5 of 18, after a ball in the water on his third stroke, forced him to drop back down to fourth position at -9. The Northern Irishman will be in ambush just one stroke from the leading trio to attack the “moving day”.

The best cards of the day go to the three leaders: Sam Horsfield, Shane Lowry and John Catlin.  The former returns to the clubhouse with a 66 (-6), while the other two have scored 65 (-7), which is so far the best card of the week. Shane Lowry may have made one of the shots of the day with a lob shot coming in at 14, allowing him to write an eagle on his card. The three men therefore occupy the lead of the DP World Tour Championship standings at -10.

Collin Morikawa is still, with the provisional classification, leader of the Race To Dubai. He is in contact with the leading men, only with blows. He returned two cards of 68 (-4) and placed himself in 6th position.
