The 2022 grand slam season is over and the final chapter of major tournaments did not disappoint the golfing world. This edition of The Open Championship, the 150th of the name, on the home of golf in St Andrews marked the history of golf by setting new records. The record for spectators at a British Open was first beaten, although entries were limited by the Royal & Ancien. The Gold Medal winner and Champion Player of the Year also broke the record for the lowest scoring at a British Open at St Andrews with a score of -20.

There were several of them this Sunday in the race to lift the Claret Jug, among them only one former winner: Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman started on Sunday co-leader at -16 with Viktor Hovland, the two Europeans having taken the lead of the tournament on Saturday thanks to two cards of 66 (-6). Their first two pursuers were four strokes behind at -12, Cameron Smith and Cameron Young.

The penultimate part waited for the start of the return to lead the charge. Rory McIlroy, who was first at -18 until then, had to give up his chair as leader to the Australian Cameron Smith, signing five birdies in a row at the start of his comeback, between 10 and 14. He will not let go of this first place, ending his week with a birdie on his 72nd hole. Cameron Young finished second in the event with a superb eagle on 18 to reach the mark of -19.

Rory McIlroy unfortunately failed to launch the birdie machine, despite a solid long game. The winner of The Open 2014 signs only two birdies on his day thanks to greens hit under regulation on the 5th and 10th. He finished third this week at St Andrews at -18. His partner of the day finished fourth in the event, after a day in 74 (+2) where he was never in the game.

Cameron Smith thus lifted his first major trophy, the Claret Jug on the 18th green of the Old Course in St Andrews, and joined Jack Nicklaus as winner of The Players and The Open the same year. The Australian obtains thanks to his best career victory, his best world ranking, second behind Scottie Scheffler.

Victor Perez, after a solid week, takes 34th place in this 150th The Open. He plays under par every day of his week at 71-69-71-70.
