The 42-year-old Spaniard faces a DP World Tour fine if he fails to provide proof of an emergency or medical condition for withdrawing from the tour's showpiece event.

The DP World Tour rules manual states that a player can only withdraw for “emergency reasons or medical circumstances deemed reasonable by the Tournament Director. »

After a first round of 76, LIV Golf joiner Sergio Garcia withdrew from the event after it was suspended - then reduced to 54 holes - due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Garcia then crossed the Atlantic and attended Saturday's Texas-Alabama football game in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Angela Akins Garcia.

An anonymous top player told the Telegraph: “Anyway, Sergio Garcia has eased off the circuit. He had moved to Wentworth indicating that he wanted to 'support the Tour', but was clearly annoyed by the comments made by Keith Pelley [CEO of the DP World Tour]. »

During a press conference on Wednesday ahead of the BMW PGA, Pelley referenced one of Garcia's past comments saying: "Can we please stop feeding nonsense on the circuit once and for all?" And regarding what is being said, that we are going to become the fifth circuit in the world, said one of our members who is playing here this week. It's incredible. »

As of Monday, Garcia's management company has not provided a reason for his withdrawal. Wentworth HQ have confirmed to Telegraph Sport that a reason must be provided within the next three weeks or else Garcia will be fined. Garcia's agent did not respond to calls or messages from Telegraph Sport.

Garcia is scheduled to compete in the LIV Golf event in Chicago this week.
