This exhibition presents 49 emblematic works from one of the most important works of art in the second half of the 20th century. It is historic for two reasons: it marks the first presentation of the works of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and the collection of Donald and Doris Fisher united by an exceptional partnership woven for many years and thus foreshadows the great project extension of the SFMOMA.

The SFMOMA is the depository of the works of the Fisher family, one of the most important private collections of modern and contemporary art in the world. Comprising more than 1 works by 100 artists, the collection of Doris and Donald Fisher began in San Francisco (the birthplace of the family) in the 185s and expanded in the late 1970s and 1980s.

SFMOMA has established a historic partnership with the Fisher family to present this extraordinary collection to the public in San Francisco. Thus the Fisher's works will be exhibited alongside works from the SFMOMA collection in the new extension of the museum. Although these two collections are not exhaustive, both are remarkable for their bias to focus on certain artists, both of which have a substantial collection of works. The two collections mainly include American and European artists who started their careers in the 1960s and 1970s and many of whom are still active today. For many, the combination of the two collections has allowed complementarity, so that some creators see in this set their work better represented than in any other museum or public collection in the world.

The richness and density of the collection make “American Icons: Masterpieces of the SFMOMA and
from the Fisher collection "a very complete exhibition of American art. If it shows an exceptional collection, this exhibition is above all an opportunity for a dialogue between works, which have never been brought together, and the French audience.

By presenting 3 to 7 works for each artist, this exhibition gives a taste of France and Europe of the state of mind and the quality that the new SFMOMA will embody when it reopens in the spring. 2016.
