As thunderstorms hit the Champions Golf Club in Houston, officials called the end of play at 10:10 am EST. The start times of the last lap had been brought forward due to scattered thunderstorms expected throughout the day, so the last group was 25 minutes from the start.

Then at 13:39 p.m., the game was officially canceled for the day, with a final scheduled for Monday, a first at the US Women's Open since 2011, when So Yeon Ryu won at Broadmoor.

The USGA tweeted "course conditions and bad weather forecast this afternoon" as the reasons for the decision.

"We want to make sure that the conditions of the course are worthy of crowning a great champion", said John Bodenhamer, senior general manager of the championships.

With the wind moving north on Monday, temperatures are expected to drop significantly. Muddy balls will be in the game again, but Lewis said it shouldn't be as bad as Saturday's round given that the USGA moved the tees over the majority of the holes. On Saturday the total distance was 6 meters. For the last lap, it will be 067 meters. In accordance with USGA tradition, there will be no “lift”, nor “clean and place”. Sunday's game scores will not be erased.

Hinako Shibuno leads to 4 under par, one stroke ahead of Amy Olson. Moriya Jutanugarn, with 1 under the par, completes the leading trio. When play was stopped, 42 of the 66 players had completed at least one hole.

Of the last 30 USWO winners, 24 were two strokes or less off the lead in the final round.
