Qualifying will take place over 36 holes and 22 courses, between April 26 and May 13. The championship is open to professional and amateur women with an index not exceeding 2,4. Online registration requests will be open from February 17 to April 14 on fields.usga.org.

The return of qualifying comes after an unprecedented year in which entry opportunities were canceled due to health and safety concerns related to COVID-19. A decision on the feasibility of an international qualification given the effects of the pandemic will be taken in the coming weeks. Since its debut in 2014, qualifying for the US Women's Open had generally been held in England, Japan, China and Korea.

“Last year was difficult in many ways and the decision to cancel qualifying was not easy”, said John Bodenhamer, general manager of the championships. “We are happy in 2021 to be able to safely bring back the qualifications and the openness that embodies all our championships. "

Of the 22 qualifying venues, California is the state with the most with four, while Florida has three.

Since qualifying for the US Women's Open began in 1976, two champions have been named from among the thousands who have attempted to qualify for the championship. Hilary Lunke became the first qualifier to win the US Women's Open in 2003 with an 18-hole playoff victory at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. Birdie Kim became the only other qualifier to win a US Women's Open thanks to her resounding victory in 2005 at Cherry Hills Country Club.

“The Olympic Club has been an incredible venue for the USGA and the US Women's Open will be an exceptional edition this year”, said Bodenhamer. “We are grateful to everyone who helps make qualifying possible and we look forward to seeing the best golfers in the world join us in San Francisco this summer. "

The record of 1 entries was set for the 873 championship at the Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club, which will again host the US Women's Open in 2015.

The 76th US Women's Open will be the 11th USGA championship to be held on the Olympic Club Lake Course, including five US Open (1955, 1966, 1987, 1998 and 2012). The club also hosted the US Amateurs of 1958, 1981 and 2007, the US Junior Amateur of 2004 and the inaugural US Amateur Four-Ball Championship in 2015. It will also host the US Amateur Championship of 2025.

The Lake Course was designed by Course Director Sam Whiting and first opened in 1924. Improvements and updates were made by Robert Trent Jones prior to the 1955 US Open and by Bill Love before the 2007 US Amateur and the 2012 US Open. The Olympic Club is recognized as one of the first 100 golf clubs created in the United States.

Considered the premier world championship in women's golf, the US Women's Open is one of 14 national championships held annually by the USGA. The championship started in 1946 and among its champions are names like Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Betsy Rawls, Mickey Wright, Hollis Stacy, Amy Alcott, Meg Mallon, Annika Sorenstam, Se Ri Pak, Juli Inkster, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Inbee Park and Michelle Wie West. In December 2020, A Lim Kim had birdies on the last three holes of Champions Golf Club to win the 75th edition of the championship, beating Jin Young Ko and Amy Olson by one point.
