Widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time, Mickey Wright died of a heart attack on Monday at the age of 85.

The American won 13 majors and 82 LPGA Tour titles to place second on the list of all-time best players behind compatriot Patty Berg (15), who died in 2006.
Mickey Wright was the dominant force in golf in the late 1950s and 1960s, winning four US Open and four PGA Women's Championships among his main victories.

“We lost a legend, but we also may have lost the best swing in golf history today,” LPGA Tour commissioner Mike Whan said on the organization's website. “Our hearts go out to his family and friends. "

"I guess they call it burnout"

American player Kathy Whitworth, who holds the LPGA record of 88 titles, said of Wright: “Today the world of golf has lost one of its greatest champions. She has contributed so much to my professional success and to my life.

“What a blessing to play alongside Mickey Mouse. It was impossible to be with her without knowing that she was someone very special. "

Mickey Wright was born in San Diego on February 14, 1935 and turned pro in 1954 after spending a year at Stanford University.

She joined the LPGA Tour the following year and won her first title at the Jacksonville Open in 1956.

She won her first two majors in 1958 and became a powerhouse in the game, earning Hall of Fame entry in 1976.

In an interview with Golf World in 2000, quoted on the LPGA Tour website, Mickey Wright said his early retirement was due to the "wait" level.

“There was a lot of pressure to compete week after week for five or six years,” she said. “I guess they call it burnout now, but it got me exhausted. Unless you are a golfer, you cannot understand the tension and pressure of tournament play. And that was the expectation: it was always: “What's wrong with the game? " You are angry ? "
“The second or third is not bad, but winning 44 tournaments in four years hurts. "

By comparison, Tiger Woods has won 15 major tournaments and 82 PGA Tour men's titles and is also second on the all-time list behind Jack Nicklaus with 18 major tournaments.
