Through this program, the Japanese government wants to encourage international tourists to visit regions of Japan in order to revitalize local economies.

The heritage sites selected will be limited in number to present the most representative works of Japanese culture. The selection of cultural goods (such as buildings, ruins, tourist sites and local festivals) is based on three criteria:

  • Traditions or customs passed down from generation to generation
  • Clear theme narrated and encouraging to visit the region
  • Captivating narrative, rather than a simple summary of regional history.
