The Gouverneur golf resort nestled in the heart of the Dombes, in the Ain department, is one of the jewels, one of the most beautiful and most important golfing areas in France. It is part of the very closed club of 4 complexes lining up 45 holes.

It was in 1992 that it was created on the former domain of the Governor of the Dombes from which it takes its name. You can still see some old buildings dating from the 330th century. The complex is spread over XNUMX hectares, without unevenness, embellished with magnificent vegetation bordered by many water features as in this whole region of Dombes

To echo this region of a thousand lakes, at the driving range, you send your balls to a pond (it is important to specify here that nature is preserved and that the balls are floating). Regularly synonymous with frustration for a golfer, here we give it our all.
What a treat to send buckets of bullets ... to yawns.
Be careful not to get used to it because the course is full of opportunities to repeat this in its game with much less enthusiasm!

The Golf du Gouverneur (affiliated to the Golfy network) offers 2 18-hole courses:

Le Breuil
Par 72 of 6312m (black) slope 139 white and 133 yellow.
Price: 81 € from the beginning of April to the end of October, 65 € the rest of the year.

Montaplan
A par 71 of 5817m slope 130 white and 121 yellow.
Considered as the N ° 2 course of the resort, its shorter route and less demanding than its big brother also benefits from the same quality of maintenance. Beware of the sequence from 11 to 15 where water is omnipresent.

We had the chance to play the Le Breuil course, here is my feeling:

It should be noted that we are at the end of October and that downpours fell until the morning of our game. So it was with a little apprehension that we joined the tee. To our surprise the terrain is impeccable. The perfectly drained fairways leave our feet dry and the greens are fast and frank. Only the rought remains fat.

It is a real pleasure to play on this course. The fauna, flora and the extreme tranquility that reigns here gives the place something magical. Water is omnipresent, you will be confronted with it on more than a dozen holes, sometimes on face-offs or intermediate shots but more often on attacks on greens. Here we are on a typical “Target Golf” course. The score proposed by the architects, Didier Fruchet and George Will, reasons without any false notes.

The holes are connected intelligently. Independent of each other thus strengthening the communion of the course with the golfer.

The Breuil remains however a demanding course but paradoxically very golfing. The face-offs remain fairly fair, thus offering several options for the second stroke. Result, you have the openness to try to attack but the backlash steals you if you gain confidence too quickly. Le Breuil will be happy to gulp your precious balls…

The must, the sequence of holes 14-15-16, the governor's amen corner:

On the 14th, a straight Par 4 Dogleg is for me the signature hole of the course. Handicap 1, it is
monstrous for several reasons: by its course which runs along a pond from tee to green, but also its challenge and the adrenaline that it distills on each stroke.

At the throw-in, slice prohibits the risk of ending up in the water which runs right over the entire hole. On the left of the thick rought dress small ripples. Only a superb throw-in authorizes the attack on the green. For the others, little advice, do not try to get as close as possible to the green. Indeed, the fairway narrows dangerously close to the green. Instead, look for a distance that you like around 80 or 100m for example.

We continue with 15, a Par 5 which can also compete for the title of the signature hole…

Rebelote, the entire right side of the hole is bathed by a pond where the water seems to have disappeared in favor of orange gorse which contrasts beautifully with the green of the fairway.

Another challenge, to dodge on the throw-in, the two superb trees, to the left and to the right of the fairway, about 200m from the start. For the second shot, you will have to place your ball on a narrow arm of the fairway, surrounded by water on the left and on the right, to then join the immense double-decked green that seems to be stranded on the pond.

To get out of the amen corner, it remains to fulfill hole 16, a sumptuous 3m Par 160. The start is placed on a tongue of land between two parts of water. At least 130m of flight to keep your ball dry and 30 more to land on the green. With the optical effect, the trees in the background seem to block the back of the green but are ultimately not in play ...

Far from thinking that Le Breuil comes down to these 3 holes, not at all, it is full of many others that your future visit will allow you to discover.

The Governor's golf course leaves me with a delicious impression and the desire to come back quickly with other friends to share this fabulous championship course with them.

We can easily understand why the Challenge Tour took up residence there for 5 years from 2008 to 2012…
