The Government announces the exceptional tax exemption of the awards to the medalists of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the revaluation of the awards from Tokyo 2020.

Exceptional tax exemption for bonuses to Olympic medalists

The Government announced this evening through the voice of the Minister of Sports Madam Roxana Maracineanu to the National Assembly, the exceptional tax exemption of the bonuses of medalists of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of PyeongChang 2018 as well as the revaluation of the State bonuses which will be paid to medalists from the next Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.

Regarding the treatment of medalists' bonuses at the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Government was sensitive to the delicate financial situation of certain beneficiary athletes as well as to the call for fair treatment between all the craftsmen. French sporting successes at the Summer and Winter Games. As a consequence and like the Rio 2016 Games, the bonuses of the athletes and their guides will be exceptionally tax-exempt for PyeongChang 2018.

Determined to promote the influence of French sport in the perspective of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022 and of course Paris in 2024, the Government has also decided to revalue the state bonuses that will be paid to athletes summer and winter medalists, to their guides but also to their supervision.

The revaluation of these premiums will primarily benefit athletes whose financial situation is most fragile. For the first time since 2008, premiums will be revised upwards.

As a reminder, these premiums have a tax system spread over four years.
