Georges Mauduit, vice-world champion in giant slalom in 1966, created, eleven years ago, a golf challenge in memory of three international ski champion friends suffering from Multiple Sclerosis: “During my career as a top athlete everything was given to me to achieve planetary goals. In a very accident-prone sport like skiing, despite the accidents, I came out in good shape, hence my commitment against Multiple Sclerosis… You have to know how to give back to society everything it has offered you for success of his life ". With the support of Dr Olivier HEINZLEF, head of the neurology service at the Poissy-Saint-Germain hospital center and president of the French League against multiple sclerosis, Georges Mauduit launched the first Georges Mauduit Challenge in 2008 on the Golf de MERIBEL. He will be present at most of the stages since that date.

The 3 main objectives of the Georges Mauduit Challenge are to raise awareness of multiple sclerosis, a disease that receives little media attention, to raise funds for Research and patient aid, and to introduce people to the practice of golf.

What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is a very disabling disease even if 80% of the symptoms are invisible to the general public (pain, cognitive symptoms, extreme fatigue, etc.) In France, where nearly 115 people are affected, it is the leading cause of disability. young people (the disease most often manifested between 000 and 20 years). It affects three times more women than men.

Combating multiple sclerosis together

There is currently no cure for multiple sclerosis. Medical research is intense and promising, but there is still a long way to go to better understand this complex pathology and find adequate treatments. In addition to its direct actions with people affected by this disease, thanks to the help of its local correspondents and expert patients, the French League against Multiple Sclerosis actively supports Research.

In 2018, thanks to the generosity of 600 participants and the partners of the Challenge Georges Mauduit, nearly 30 euros were donated to the French League against multiple sclerosis. This sum made it possible to support a medical researcher for a year on his research project, to improve the targeting of loss of mobility in order to adapt rehabilitation, with the aim of maintaining the possibility of walking and moving as long as possible.

Golf a sport for everyone

Physical activity is beneficial for the health, physical well-being and morale of patients and improves their quality of life. Thus, introductions to the practice of golf for people with multiple sclerosis and their entourage will be a strong point of the Challenge Georges Mauduit. With the participation of the Handigolf Association, we will be able to introduce this sport, accessible with a handicap. The discovery and initiation days are planned during the stages on the golf courses of the Golf de Guerville and the Golf de Valescure.

The dates of the Georges Mauduit Challenge

From May 11 to October 20, 2019, nine partner golf courses open their greens to all for a friendly competition, whose playing rights and individual donations are fully donated to the French League against Multiple Sclerosis for its support activities to Research and help people.

The Georges Mauduit Challenge will take place in a 2 scramble over 18 holes. Participants will pay a green fee of at least 60 euros per team. Players from outside the club will also pay the applicable green fee. The 1st “gross” Team, the first 3 “net” Teams, and the 1st Women's Team will be rewarded.
