“I wanted the 40th anniversary of the Center Pompidou to be the celebration of artistic creation everywhere in France. Let it testify to the vitality of cultural institutions which share the spirit of the Center Pompidou. Let it celebrate the links forged with artists, museums, art centers, performance stages, festivals, to develop and enrich a long history of joint projects in the service of art and creation. Let it be an opportunity to meet those who have loved the Center Pompidou for 40 years as if meeting new audiences.

The anniversary of the Center Pompidou is placed under the sign of the territory, through very varied events, to stimulate, support, promote, facilitate projects. »Specifies Serge Lasvignes, president of the Center Pompidou.

1977 – 2017

The first born of a new generation of cultural establishments, the Center Pompidou was dedicated by its founder to modern and contemporary creation, at the crossroads of disciplines: "A cultural center that is both a museum and a center of creation, where the visual arts would border on music, cinema, books… ”. There was originally the idea that a society is all the more agile, able to question itself, to innovate, that it knows how to open up to the art of its time.

Forty years later, the Center Pompidou is a major cultural player in France and abroad. It brings together in a single place a collection of more than 100 works, a public reading library (the Bpi), cinemas and shows, a music research institute (Ircam), spaces for educational activities … It presents some twenty-five temporary exhibitions each year. Place of reference as of prospective, it is also a popular place which seeks relentlessly, through its programming and its projects, to widen its public. Its revolutionary building has become an icon of 000th century architecture and the embodiment of a spirit. It is on a level with the city and with its visitors; we come across all artistic expressions, we transcend the partitions and hierarchies between the arts, we sharpen curiosities. In 20 years, it has welcomed, surprised, seduced, provoked, questioned and moved more than 40 million visitors.

At the crossroads of disciplines, the programming for this 40th anniversary demonstrates the commitment of the Center Pompidou alongside cultural institutions in the regions, essential players in the dissemination and promotion of the art of our time. Scattering the whole territory, this network of partners is characterized by its diversity: museums, art centers, monuments, festivals, spectacle stages, with which the Center Pompidou has maintained trusting relationships for many years, which share the same watch out for contemporary creation.

The Center Pompidou marks this anniversary by supporting the initiatives of its partners with loans of exceptional works and co-productions. The 51 exhibitions highlight all aspects of the collection of the national museum of modern art. Some of these proposals were scientifically co-designed with a curator from the Center Pompidou. In terms of live performance, both long-standing friendships and new partnerships are highlighted. At the heart of the programming for this anniversary, the shows on offer are part of either the annual program of partners and the Pompidou Center or specific creation times in the form of festivals (actoral festival, Latitudes contemporaines festival, festival DañsFabrik with Quartz…). From Arles to Metz, via Brest, Armentières and Nantes, the Center Pompidou and its partners thus support artists, whether they are companies already presented several times at the Center Pompidou or young talents.

An anniversary shared with IRCAM and BPI

For this anniversary season, IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique / Musique) presents five creations in Bourges, Lyon, Marseille, Paris and Strasbourg. Combining music, theater, dance, opera and visual arts, these projects are the result of close artistic collaboration with the performance stages of these cities. These achievements reflect the diversity of artistic forms developed at IRCAM and testify to its commitment alongside those involved in the production and dissemination of contemporary creation throughout France.

The Public Information Library (Bpi) has chosen to strengthen the action beyond the walls of the International Documentary Film Festival "Cinéma du réel" of which it is the organizer.
