"I would have been very honored to participate in the Olympic Games and to become a member of the France team, but I feel that I have lost my golf level, and I prefer to give up my place", explained Victor Dubuisson in a press release.

This package comes on top of a long list of absentees who hit the Olympic golf tournament in Rio, deprived of the five best players in the world after the package announced Monday by the American and world No.3 Jordan Spieth. Some golfers have justified their withdrawal because of the Zika virus which is hitting part of Brazil.

But this renunciation on the French side is however a small surprise. Victor Dubuisson, who has dominated French golf for several years now, had indeed explained to the press during the French Open ten days ago that he would go to Rio.

“If I am qualified (…), yes yes it is sure that I will be in Rio. There will be no problem with Zika or anything ”, he had said. Dubuisson, who had managed to pass the cut during the French Open, had loosened somewhat the last two days and finished last.

Dubuisson, 78th player in the world, and first Frenchman, therefore had his ticket in his pocket, France having to send two representatives to the Olympic golf tournament in Rio, the two best in the world ranking.

Suddenly, France finally sends Rio Grégory Bourdy, 112th in the world, who signed a very nice 18th place in the US Open in mid-June, and Julien Quesne, 123rd player in the world.
