Saint Andrew: Seven women accepted for the first time in the prestigious club
Seven women, including six former golf glories and Princess Anne, were accepted as members by the prestigious Scottish club of Saint Andrews for the first time in its long history.
In September, the golf club voted 85% to end a 260-year-long policy that reserved it exclusively for men. The daughter of the Queen of England Elizabeth, 11th in line for the accession to the throne, is among the chosen personalities.
"It's a historic day for the club and we couldn't be more proud to welcome women who have distinguished themselves in golf in recent years", rejoiced club captain George Mcgregor in a statement.
The six golfers selected are: British Laura Davies, Swedish Annila Sorenstam, Scottish Belle Robertson, French Lally Segard, African-American Renee Powell and 91-year-old American Louise Suggs. Other women are also expected to be admitted in the coming months.
