Sean Connery, world famous for playing James Bond 007 in six films on the big screen, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in the Bahamas "he hasn't been very well lately" his son Jason Connery told the BBC .

In a career spanning five decades, the Edinburgh-born Hollywood superstar has also starred in films like The Rock, The Hunt For Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade and The Untouchables. The latter earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1988.

Away from the big screen, Connery was a golf fanatic, where he is discovered a golfer for a famous scene from Goldfinger in which Bond faces off against the villain at Stoke Park Golf Club in Hertfordshire. He would go on to become a regular at celebrity events and pro-ams.

In his 2008 book "Being A Scot," Connery explains in detail how he fell in love with the royal and ancient game.

He wrote : “I never wanted to play golf, although I grew up in Scotland, right next to Bruntsfield Links, which is one of the oldest golf courses in the world. It wasn't until I learned enough about golf to look like I could outsmart accomplished golfer Gert Frobe in Goldfinger that I caught the bug. "

“I started taking classes on a course near the Pinewood movie studios, and I immediately got hooked on gambling. Soon it was going to almost take over my life. I started to see golf as a metaphor for life, because in golf you are essentially alone, competing with yourself and always trying to do better. If you cheat, you will be the loser, because you are lying to yourself. "

He added : “Over the years, golf has taught me a lot, and its implicit codes of conduct have brought me closer to religion. "

Since news of Connery's death first broke, tributes have started pouring in from across the golf community.
