Michelle Wie (Korean: 위성미) born October 11, 1989 in Honolulu, is an American golfer.
Born to parents of Korean origin, she began golf at the age of 4, and won her first tournaments against adults from the age of 11. Impressed by Tiger Woods, she decided to become a golfer and enrolled in a university that Tiger Woods attended, Stanford University.
She participated in her first LPGA tournament in 2002. She is the youngest person in golf history to win an amateur tournament for adults. She obtained her first big results on the LPGA circuit in 2004 with a 4th place at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, one of the four major players on the women's circuit. At 14, she did better than Tiger Woods, who was 21 when he was in the top 5 of one of the major circuits.
The same year, she became the 4th woman and the youngest person to participate in a PGA tournament. She will miss the cut all at once.
2005 is an even better year. She finished 2nd behind Annika Sörenstam of the LPGA Championship, another major tournament. She then failed in the quarterfinals in the qualifying amateur championship to a place in the Masters.
She also finished 2nd in the Evian Masters, then 3rd in the Womens British Open.
On October 5, 2005, she announced her passage into the professional world. At this press conference, she announced the signing of contracts with Nike and Sony, which guaranteed her an annual income of 10 million USD. She becomes the highest paid golfer, far ahead of the Swedish Annika Sörenstam, however n ° 1 in the world.
She competes in her first tournament as a professional during the Samsung World Championship. During this one, she was disqualified on a bad drop during the 3rd round, when she had finished in 4th place. She must therefore return her first earnings, $ 53.
On Friday May 5, 2006 she spent the cut for the first time in her career in a men's tournament, qualifying for the last two rounds. This is the SK Telecom tournament in Seoul, Korea. She finished this tournament 12 strokes from the winner after a 74 on the last day.
