This January 27, 2024 is a date that has become historic for French golf. At 31, Matthieu Pavon won the first French victory on the PGA Tour by lifting the Farmers Insurance Open trophy. It is a victory for French golf but above all a victory for this player who was on the DP World Tour a few weeks ago, with a clean sheet of victory.

In nine tournaments, Matthieu Pavon has changed dimensions: he won his first victory in Europe at the Spanish Open, won a right to play on the PGA Tour during the DP World Tour Championship, signed his first top 10 in the States -United and now, the holy grail: a victory on the greatest circuit in the world, the circuit of his dreams.

In the final part on Sunday, Matthieu Pavon was one stroke behind German leader Stephan Jaeger. After nine holes, the delay was erased for the Frenchman who even took the lead at 12 after a bogey from his direct opponent.

At the end of the game, all the emotions ran through the French fans behind Matthieu. Exaltation at 16, a par saved thanks to a long distance putt. The scare at 17 after a three putt reduced our Frenchman's lead to one shot with a hole to play. And what an epilogue... Put in in the bunker near the lip for Pavon, drive full fairway for his most dangerous pursuer Nicolai Højgaard.

But our Frenchman has nerves of steel and he demonstrated it once again. After a bunker exit expelled into the rough, Matthieu Pavon released the right shot at the right time, reviving the feat of Tiger Woods on the same Torey Pines course in 2008. At 134 meters, Matthieu Pavon plants a last time the flag and sinks the victory putt to win the Farmers Insurance Open.

Just after his victory, Matthieu Pavon answered a few questions from our American colleagues.

“I had almost no pressure when I arrived, playing in America. It feels like it’s an opportunity. If I fail, I just have to go back to Europe and start again. So I tried to do my best every day and enjoy every moment. I'm like on a cloud, I'm flying. It's incredible. You just have to work hard and believe in it. If you believe you can do it, you can do it. said Pavon.

This victory should propel him to around 35th place in the world. He is now sure to play for three years on the PGA Tour and will be present at the next Masters in Augusta.
