Callaway today unveiled its all-new 2018 Chrome Soft and Chrome X Soft golf balls with SoftFast ™ dual-core, featuring space-age graphene, the strongest and thinnest material known to man.

Graphene, 200 times stronger than steel but flexible enough to bend, twist, bend and stretch without breaking, added incredible strength to the outer core of both Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X golf balls, transforming the performance of the tee to green.

It was first produced in a laboratory at the University of Manchester, UK, in 2004 by Russian-born scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, who were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work.

In a revolutionary new performance recipe, graphene nanoparticles, in the form of a thin, two-dimensional arrangement of carbon atoms in a hexagonal pattern, have been added to the outer core of each Callaway Chrome golf ball as an agent reinforcement.

Subsequently, the strength and flexibility properties of graphene allowed R&D experts to push the limits of compression between inner and outer cores to new frontiers.

The soft inner core now deforms more under greater forces, so when impacted with a driver, fairway or long iron it suppresses the spin, resulting in explosive speed and longer distance.

On shorter shots, the graphene-infused outer core helps the ball retain its shape better, generating a Tour-level spin, perfect for controlling the shot in and around the green.

The stronger graphene infused outer core also promotes a new, softer urethane cover to better "grip" the outer core, generating consistently high spin levels from shorter irons.

Dr. Alan Hocknell, Senior Vice President, Research and Development at Callaway Golf, commented: “The new Chrome Soft is unlike any golf ball proven on the Tour. It's different. Using graphene as a strengthening agent in the outer core transforms what we can do with performance. "

“To the naked eye, graphene looks like a fine powder but when dispersed in our rubber matrix it greatly strengthens the internal structure of the golf ball, optimizing launch dynamics, maximizing distance and increasing or decreasing the spin. "

The main differentiator between Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X is the feel. Chrome Soft X is geared toward players with higher swing speeds (105mph and higher) looking for a slightly firmer feel, while standard Chrome Soft will appeal to a wide range of abilities.

Highlights of Chrome Soft Performance:

  • Optimized compression, feel and spin profile throughout the bag
  • Maximum double core compression differential that allows players of any ability to compress the ball on the club face
  • Faster ball speed thanks to a firmer outer core and a new manufacturing method that brings us closer to the USGA / R&A speed limit
  • Reduced rotation without sacrificing ball speed
  • Better sound, smoother, while maintaining ball compression, thanks to the large internal core

Soft Chrome golf balls will be in store starting February 16, 2018.
