The 107th PGA Championship is off to a strong start at Quail Hollow. Jhonattan Vegas takes the lead at -7 (64), ahead of two other outsiders: Ryan Gerard and Cameron Davis (-5). Luke Donald, captain of the European Ryder Cup team, also climbs into the top of the leaderboard with a solid 67 (-4). Among the favorites, this first day is a mixed bag, with Scheffler in the top 20 and McIlroy and Schauffele both above par. Matthieu Pavon and Victor Perez are 46th and 73rd, respectively.

No one expected Jhonattan Vegas to lead the 107th PGA Championship after the first round. The 40-year-old Venezuelan shot a 64-under 7 with nine birdies and two bogeys. Vegas, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, has never really shone in majors, his best finish being a 22nd-place finish at the 2016 USPGA Championship. This is the first time a Venezuelan has led a major tournament.

Behind, two outsiders, Ryan Gerard and Cameron Davis, follow at -5 (66). Luke Donald, meanwhile, impresses with a bogey-free 67 (-4), a fine example for his players who will once again be Ryder Cup captain in New York in September.

Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, is in the running. At -1, he's five shots off the lead in the top 2 of this PGA Tour event at Quail Hollow.

The favorites are struggling, however. Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose are at +5, Rory McIlroy at +3, and Brooks Koepka at +4. Jordan Spieth, who is also chasing the Grand Slam by attempting to win the PGA Championship, seems to be letting another chance slip through his fingers. He came close in 2015, finishing second behind Jason Day.

Matthieu Pavon and Victor Perez are 46th and 73rd respectively. Both Frenchmen need to make birdies this Friday to start the weekend with confidence.
