Horizon Resort Massane: a golf complex that’s greener than green
Built on vineyard lands nearly 40 years ago, the Massane Golf Course has had a makeover. With a new name, new design, and new spaces, this internationally renowned venue has been redesigned with a 100% green approach and expanded offerings. The new resort now offers 4-star accommodations and a vast business center, a high-end spa, and a diverse range of restaurants open to all, making it the perfect place to play golf, but also to meet and connect. A privileged living space that embraces a new form of hospitality, where people and nature are at the heart of the experience.
An eco-responsible golf resort
Acquired in 2020 by the Hérault-based Eoden group (a pioneer in the region's ecological transition), Horizon Resort Massane is a magnificent example of eco-efficient hospitality. Built on the foundations of the former Domaine de Massane using low-carbon concrete and recycled materials (including reused and crushed old concrete from the site), the new eco-designed building, equipped with a geothermal system and solar panels, is 70% energy self-sufficient. Its planted terraces also contribute to its thermal regulation, optimizing the overall energy consumption. On the golf course side, water consumption has been reduced by almost 50%.
A golf course redesigned in its environment
With its 70 hectares of green space, golf has been part of the Massane region's DNA for almost 40 years. Created in 1988 by Californian architect Ronalf Fream, with its undulating fairways, links, and golden sand bunkers, the 18-hole Massane Golf Course is internationally renowned and combines aesthetics and technique, offering stimulating challenges for players of all levels. It also offers an exceptional compact 9-hole course, open to beginners and professionals alike. Already designed to blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape, the Massane Golf Course is today an example to follow in terms of eco-responsibility.
- Optimized water management : Water management was the central focus of the renovation, and the irrigation system was redesigned to precisely target the playing areas. This innovation has enabled a reduction in water consumption across the entire golf course of almost 50%.
- A grass adapted to the region : On the turf side, the golf team has opted for a grass that requires less water and is suited to warm climates: Bermuda Grass. This grass takes on a yellow tint in winter when it goes dormant, which may surprise some golfers accustomed to an evergreen course, but it is greener than the vast majority of turf that covers greens around the world.
- Respected biodiversity : After an inventory of the surrounding flora and fauna (more than 300 species recorded), insect hotels, reptile walls, and hedgehog houses were installed. A commitment to protecting biodiversity that earned the Massane Golf Course the bronze eco-label awarded by the French Golf Federation.
- New cutting-edge equipment : The renovation of the Massane Golf Course also allowed the installation of a driving range with 24 bays, both above and below ground. Brand new, it is equipped with a Trackman simulator with radars analyzing the passage of the club at impact and tracing the trajectory of the ball with various measurements such as the path of the club, its speed, the angle of attack and even the distance. A state-of-the-art training device (the most advanced on the market) allows both beginner golfers and high-level athletes to precisely improve their swing.
An accommodation offering focused on nature
In terms of design, the new 4-star resort was designed to allow guests to disconnect and reconnect with nature, combining natural materials, refined decor, and a play of transparency with greenery. There are 84 rooms and 6 suites with terraces overlooking the golf course, plus 39 apartments with gardens to meet the needs of travelers seeking independence. A 270 m² villa with a swimming pool (accommodating up to 8 guests) is also available for rent.
Spaces dedicated to well-being
While the new building's wave-like architecture seamlessly blends with the estate's contours, it is echoed in the restorative waters of its spa. A vast indoor pool with organic curves, meditation areas, and stone and wood furniture create an oasis of tranquility. In keeping with the resort's environmental philosophy, the Zephyr SPA offers treatments in collaboration with Thalgo, an organic Provençal brand offering products that are 98% natural. To complete the experience, the resort also has a fitness room and offers coaching sessions upon request, sunrise yoga classes, and discovery sessions of its permaculture gardens.
A shared kitchen
The variety of activities to reconnect with nature offered at Massane extends to the plate, since the resort's culinary offerings favor products from the Jardins d'Eoden vegetable garden (1 hectare of cultivation) in its Azalée restaurant. Local producers are also in the spotlight, and the cuisine is plant-based, local, and Mediterranean. There is a bistronomic menu as well as pizzas around a large circular oven, in a friendly atmosphere. In the evening, you can gather around mezze and herbal cocktails to the sound of a concert at the Bar Zeste, in a cozy interior or on its terrace with swimming pool. Finally, near the driving range, the Birdie (the former food truck that was a huge success during the renovation of the estate) remains the golfers' refuge. True to its original concept, it's the perfect place for a relaxed gourmet break, whether you prefer a sandwich or the daily special. In the evening, people enjoy a drink after a round of golf or meet up for an after-work drink, whether they're staying at the hotel or not. At Birdie, residents from the surrounding villages also gather, creating a welcoming atmosphere that's open to all and conducive to socializing.
A business center that thinks big
Business tourism has pride of place at the Horizon Resort, as it now boasts a dedicated 1000 m² space with 10 modular rooms, making it the largest business center in the Montpellier region. Seminars, cocktail parties, meetings, business evenings, product launches,
vehicle demonstrations… This space called Panorama is designed to stimulate collaboration, exchange and innovation on the MICE side.
Values carried by two enthusiasts
The first Leadbetter Golf Academy was born on the unique site of the Massane estate, with the opening in 1989 of a training center and a high-level campus. Bruno Castel, director of the golf course since late 2023 (and passionate since childhood), shares the values held by Guy and Alain Jeanjean since they created the Golf de Massane. Very committed to the development of golf for all, Bruno Castel is actively involved with the Leadbetter Academy, which now has around forty players from all over Europe. And while several competitions are already on the program, the recreational public has its place here. The new facilities are designed for everyone and the Massane team has a sincere desire to share its knowledge of golf.
These values of sharing are also held high by Laurette Lapeine, appointed head of the new hotel complex, a sports enthusiast whose love of the collective is felt. She is committed to making the resort a place of life and exchange and organizes a multitude of cultural activities, open to both resort guests and non-guests. The spaces of the new complex have also been designed as meeting places, whether they be the lounges, the terraces and the gardens: havens of interaction where guests can meet, exchange... or simply observe the life around them.
Laurette and Bruno's human values are also reflected in the way they manage their teams, with whom they cultivate a healthy and motivating work environment. A philosophy of respect for others is reflected in the quality of service and hospitality.
Whether you come to play golf, dine, listen to a concert, organize a business meeting, relax in the spa or spend an extended stay, the horizon is always clear in Massane, where a wind of renewal is blowing, resolutely green.
